Roof Replacement in Centreville, VA

Roof Repair and Roof Replacement in Centreville, VA

This week’s customer journey is pretty special.  Alice reached out to Schaefer Burdett Exteriors a little over 2 years ago regarding a roof leak.  The roof was about 16 years old at the time.  Josh went and visited with the homeowners and went up on the roof to inspect the issue.  After inspecting, a few shingles were discovered as missing and damaged.  Josh offered up a replacement option, and a repair option.

After some consideration, the homeowners decided to proceed with the repair option at that time.  Josh was able to repair the roof on the spot, using materials he kept in his truck.  The homeowners were given a 1-year warranty against leaking for the roof repair.

When we are able, Schaefer Burdett provides both a repair and replacement options for roofing.  Most asphalt roofs in the area last around 18-20 years before they start to expire and need replacing.  If we inspect the roof and it’s not able to be repaired, we’ll tell you and provide a replacement price option.

2 years after the repair was complete, the homeowners knew it was time to replace.  Since they had such a good experience with Schaefer Burdett, they called us back exclusively for an estimate.  Mike, one of Schaefer Burdett’s Project Consultants, went out and provided a consultative estimate.  Within a few days, the homeowners proceeded and within a few weeks they had a new roof!  They went with Certainteed Landmark in Charcoal, a timeless look that certainly increases curb appeal of the home as well as provides peace of mind against any leaks.

If you or anyone you need a new roof, siding, windows, doors or gutters, give us a call!  You can also contact us here.

Trim Replacement in Vienna, VA

Trim Replacement in Vienna, VA using Azek with James Hardie Fiber Cement

Our next customer journey is a unique one.  This customer reached out to us with a 4 year old, beautiful modern home with James Hardie fiber cement and extensive wood trim (about 3,000 feet of trim, to be exact!). There were several issues the builder left on the home.  The primary issue was the water was draining into wood trim with no flashing, causing premature wood rot.  Since the homeowner just invested into this beautiful Vienna single family home, they decided to treat the symptoms in one fell swoop on the whole home.

After two thorough site inspection with both SBE owners, Josh and Toby recommended to have almost all the existing wood trim replaced using a composite PVC white trim.  Doing this eliminates the need for maintenance and the possibility of wood rot.  A thorough estimate was provided on the spot to Steve, the homeowner, and a decision to move forward was reached shortly thereafter.

Schaefer Burdett uses DocuSign to send proposals, allowing you to view the written estimate in the comfort of your own home without anyone pressuring you to make a decision.  Once you sign the DocuSign agreement, SBE is notified right away and reaches out with a welcome email and next steps.  For the deposit, SBE uses QuickBooks invoicing tools to send you a secure payment portal where you can use either an e-bank transfer or credit/debit card.  This allows you to pay at your convenience and you don’t have to schedule a time to speak with an SBE representative.  For those customers that are more traditional, we can also accept credit/debit card over the phone or personal checks.

Schaefer Burdett also offers financing through our bank partner, EnerBank.  EnerBank offers over 20 financing plans to meet every term and interest rate need you can think of.  The approval process is super fluid and takes about 5 minutes over the phone.  All the loan documents can be signed and viewed on an online portal with EnerBank.  Schaefer Burdett offers a variety of 0% financing plans through EnerBank.

The trim project was completed in a matter of days.  One of the primary concerns with the job was that the trim butted directly up to fiber cement siding, which required a very careful dismount.  After the job was done, SBE was able to apply touch up paint and replacement panels as necessary to make the property look better than new!  The homeowners were extremely happy and left the following review on Google, where Schaefer Burdett is a Google Guaranteed partner:

Schaefer Burdett regularly ensures are customers are ecstatic with the final product.  We are in the business of protecting one of your largest investments, your home, and beautifying it in the process.  We love delighting our customers and would love to have the opportunity to serve you.  If you’re in need of roofing, siding, windows, or door work please contact us here.  All pictures shown in this post are of the job after completion.

Cedar Shake Roof Replacement – Great Falls, VA

In today’s customer journey, we get to explore one of the most luxurious roofing materials on the market: Cedar Shake

Alex S reached out to Schaefer Burdett Exteriors after doing extensive research on roofing companies in Northern Virginia that install cedar shake roofs.  Alex started the process after realizing his home suffered from storm-related wind damage.  Alex reached out to USAA and opened a claim.  USAA determined there was indeed wind damage to the existing cedar shakes, and worked with Schaefer Burdett Exteriors to cover the cost of the entire job.

Schaefer Burdett Exteriors knows how to appropriately build and file an itemized claim estimate in the insurance company’s format.  This process is often very tedious and confusing.  Hiring Schaefer Burdett Exteriors to work with the insurance company will often pay dividends, as we know how to properly build an itemized claim estimate according to the type of damage on the home, and the type of material present. The type and format of the insurance estimate is very different and much more complicated than a standard estimate produced for a homeowner’s review.

Alex’s new cedar shake roof will be completely installed today – the whole job took 3 days start to finish on a roughly 3600 square foot roof with two mansard sections.  Cedar shake is certainly more of a financial investment than asphalt shingles, but the look is timeless and classic.  Cedar shakes come in medium and heavy thickness, as well as hand-split and machine-cut varieties. On this particular job, we also installed copper valley flashing and counter flashing, giving the home an extra luxurious appearance. The mansard section of the roof really shows off the new shakes from the curb, and will maintain the curb appeal of this beautiful Great Falls home for years to come.

If you’re interested in having a luxury roofing material installed like cedar shake, slate, or synthetic slate, look no further.  Schaefer Burdett routinely installs high-end roofing and siding materials around Northern Virginia and our customers are delighted.   Schaefer Burdett Exteriors installs all types of roofing, siding, and windows.  Please contact us here if you’re interested in a free estimate!

Roof Replacement: Northern Virginia

In this edition of Schaefer Burdett’s customer journey, we will be highlighting a townhouse roof replacement.  Townhouses are a unique project – they’re often 3-stories high and usually significantly smaller and quicker projects than single family homes.  However, many townhouses have unique shapes, pitches, and layouts.  This townhouse, as seen in our final drone picture, has an extended back side of the roof, making it larger than the average townhouse roof.

A normal town home roof is roughly 1,000 square feet, accounting for waste during the construction job.  According to Cost Vs Value Report, the average cost for a roof replacement in the Great Washington Area is $24,647 for 235 lb fiberglass asphalt shingles for a 3,000 square foot roof.  These types of shingles include Certainteed Landmark, GAF Timberline HD, among others.

Breaking the math down, $24,647 into 3,000 square feet results in $8.21 per square foot.  This is the cost per square foot to replace a roof in Northern Virginia, on average.  If you own a normal townhouse at 1,000 square feet, you’re looking at paying about $8,210 on average.  This pricing does not represent Schaefer Burdett’s roofing pricing.  In fact, Schaefer Burdett is almost always priced below the national average especially for asphalt roofs. We maintain extremely high quality but have a low-overhead business, resulting in a great value for our customers.

So, if you’re getting door hangers that are advertising “$5,000 per roof!” without having ever been on your roof, measured your roof with an EagleView, or even met you, beware!  These types of companies often have limited or zero project management during the job and quality could be questionable.  Schaefer Burdett Exteriors prices each roof individually after speaking with our customers in-person, hand-measuring the roof, or ordering a reliable satellite report on the roof size and slope.

If you or anyone you know needs a new roof before we head into the busy fall, please mention the code “CVV” and get $250 off your next project.  Schaefer Burdett Exteriors specializes in all types of roofing, siding, windows, and doors. Roof Replacement: Certainteed Landmark in Sterling, VA

Our next customer journey is about Jody J. in Sterling, VA.  Jody reached out to SBE regarding issues with the roof leaking and possible mold forming on the decking of the roof.  Josh, co-owner of SBE, conducted a site visit to inspect the issue.

Josh went on the roof to inspect the initial damage, then went into the adjacent attic to inspect further.  After doing a thorough external inspection Josh came to the conclusion that the roof needed to be replaced.  After a full review, Josh informed Jody that the issue of mold was due to poor ventilation of the roof.  Josh also informed Jody that the asphalt shingles were beyond their usable life and recommended a full roof replacement in order to provide a comprehensive solution.

One thing worth mentioning about this particular job: SBE was not the cheapest price Jody received.  Josh was up front and honest about being more expensive than the other competitor that Jody was meeting with.  SBE prices their jobs in a very fair manner and is usually right in the “middle of the pack” with pricing.  However, we do not aim or try to be the cheapest.  One of the reasons we simply cannot be the cheapest price is due to our extensive hands-on project management approach to exterior projects.  A company owner touches every piece of the job – and we stake our reputation on our work. Trust is paramount when hiring a roofing contractor.

Within three weeks of signing up, SBE started the roofing job and finished within 2 days, including a thorough clean up and final inspection.  This would normally have been a 1-day job, but the customer elected to replace the whole plywood deck as part of the job.  Karen and her husband decided to change the roofing material to Certainteed Landmark in Heather Blend (a brown variant).  The new asphalt shingle increased the curb appeal of the Sterling single family home.

Recently, Jody and Karen hired SBE for yet another project!  Stay tuned for our future post where we will highlight the new siding, gutters, and trim project.

SBE is a “Shingle Master” through Certainteed, meaning we offer a 4-star warranty that is backed by Certainteed, one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the world.  Certainteed Landmark carries a 50-year, non-prorated warranty for materials, as well as a 130-mph wind warranty.  SBE also offers a 10 year “no questions asked” workmanship warranty for this type of roof replacement.  SBE offers 24-hour emergency roofing services for all previous and existing roofing customers and we take pride in delivering top-notch customer service.

If your home needs roofing, siding, windows, doors, or gutters, please reach out to SBE today!  You can email us at [email protected] or call at 703.628.7663.  Please mention the “Sterling Post” to receive $250 off your project.  SBE offers financing and accepts all major credit cards.

Certainteed Landmark Moire Black

Roof & Gutter Replacement: Certainteed Landmark in Fairfax, VA

Andrew G. recently reached out to Schaefer Burdett Exteriors for a roof replacement, gutter replacement, and soffit repair estimate.  Andrew did extensive research on companies in Northern Virginia and ended up reaching out to SBE after seeing their Angie’s List Super Service Award, Google Guaranteed status, and stellar Yelp reviews.

Schaefer Burdett was able to come and visit with Andrew within 4 days.  Josh met with Andrew and talked a little bit about the company and ended up emailing the estimate so Andrew could speak with his wife about the job.

Andrew’s roof was 20 years old and had visible damage on the shingles as well as minor leaks inside.  He reached out to several contractors and decided Schaefer Burdett would serve him better than any other company in the area.  He also had visible soffit damage.  While it’s easy to find a contractor to replace just your roof, it can actually be challenging to find a company that can do it all.  When SBE finished the job, the home looked visibly newer and had an improved curb appeal.  Check out the before and after pictures and decide for yourself!

Schaefer Burdett offers competitive financing plans, accepts all major credit cards, and offers cash discounts for all projects.  If your roof is aging, if you notice leaks, or if you’d like a free inspection please reach out to SBE today and we’ll get you set up with a consultation.  Please reach out to us at 703.628.7663 or tell us more about your project here: https://www.schaeferburdett.com/contact/

Roof Replacement: Cedar Shake to Certainteed Belmont in Great Falls, VA

Schaefer Burdett Exteriors (SBE) is exciting to announce: we will be posting regular blog posts about our projects.  We understand that when customers begin the process of researching companies to invest with for projects like roofing, siding, windows, doors and gutters, it can be a bit daunting.  The aim of these blog posts is to show the extensive work that SBE puts into each and every job in order to deliver a top-quality end result – a finished exterior remodeling project that brings the homeowner peace of mind.

In these posts, we will talk about the customer journey, the type of project, and other relevant details about the process.  Our first customer to highlight is Jim B in Great Falls, VA.  Jim reached out to SBE regarding drywall staining in one of his upstairs rooms.  Josh and Toby, owners of SBE, conducted a site visit to inspect the issue.

Josh and Toby went inside to inspect the initial damage in the room, then went into the adjacent attic to inspect further.  After doing a thorough internal inspection, Toby went on the cedar shake roof and inspected the condition of the roof.  After a full review, Josh and Toby informed Jim that the issue of drywall discoloration was due to poor ventilation of the roof.  Josh also informed Jim that the cedar shakes were beyond their usable life and recommended a full roof replacement in order to provide a comprehensive solution.

Jim’s wife was not present for the appointment, so he decided to speak with his wife before proceeding with the job.  After one week of deliberation, Jim decided to proceed with a full roof replacement on a 7,000+ square foot job.  Jim actually didn’t meet with any other roofers and fully trusted SBE’s pricing and recommendation, relying our robust online presence and after reading other customer reviews.  Trust is paramount when hiring a roofing contractor.

Within three weeks, SBE started the roofing job and finished within 3 days, including a thorough clean up and final inspection.  Jim and his wife decided to change the roofing material to Certainteed Belmont in Shenandoah (brown).  The new luxury asphalt shingle maintained an elegant look on the Great Falls single family home.

SBE is a “Shingle Master” through Certainteed, meaning we offer a 4-star warranty that is backed by Certainteed, one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the world.  Certainteed Belmont carries a 50-year, non-prorated warranty for materials, as well as a 130 mph wind warranty.  SBE also offers a 10 year “no questions asked” workmanship warranty for this type of roof replacement.  SBE offers 24-hour emergency roofing services for all previous and existing roofing customers and we take pride in delivering top-notch customer service.

Repair vs. Replace

The age old question in roofing is how much longer will it last. “Can you just put up a quick patch job and give it a few years?” “I think we’ll wait till the Spring to do anything serious.” “Will this fix the leak?”

The questions above are just a small sample of real questions asked by our customers and it’s likely you have the same ones. While it may seem like an easy thing to just throw up some shingles in a compromised area, often more times than not it is quite a bit more complicated. The process of patching starts with the age of your roof. Generally, it is not good practice to confidently go in repairing a damaged area of asphalt shingles when the roof is above 10 years old. The main reason for this comes down to The Brittle Test. This is basically a way for roofers to determine if shingles surrounding the compromised area will lift without becoming compromised themselves. In order for a shingle to properly be installed, you have to lift the shingles above in order to nail along the proper lines and keep a watertight seal throughout the roof. If a crease forms on any of the surrounding shingles, that set has been compromised and can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs to continue working, that is, if the worker even tells you. Schaefer Burdett Exteriors will always perform the brittle test before working on any repair related job. This ensures we are able to warranty any part of the roof we work on as well as inform you of other issues that come up.
